“A great miracle happened there…”
Greater City Providence wishes one and all a Chag Chanukah Same’ach (Happy Chanukah). The historic lesson of Chanukah, especially this year for Americans in these difficult economic times and for those of us who love America’s cities and their mass transit systems, is that no matter how dark or how bleak things may seem, there is always hope. The Rhode Island Jewish Community’s calendar of events is here. The international Orthodox Jewish “inreach” organization Chabad (from whom the photo above of a public menorah against the Vancouver skyline was borrowed) has a very cool photo gallery of similar public chanukiot located around the world.
As a transit aside, my wife traveled today from Providence to Kennedy Airport in New York to fly to Israel. She reports that from Providence Station to the Amtrak trip to the subway to the airport, it couldn’t have been much easier. Hopefully in the years ahead, as we focus on our tranportation infrastructure, we’ll all be able to take such intercity trips in yet easier, faster, and more pleasant fashions…
