Greater City Providence

Around the Web…

1newspaper_box_1There have been a few interesting stories in and around the web of late. Here are a few:

Smallest State Grapples With Oversize Problems:
I don’t know how I missed this, but the NY Times recently had an article on Rhode Island’s current woes (and its potential). For an out of state paper, the article surprisingly gets most of the key issues correct, due in no small part, I think, to quotes from good folk like Jack Templin and Scott Wolf.

RISD Faculty Vote to Freeze Wages:
This refers to the full-time faculty union. The details are at Boston.com.

GTECH annual revenue surges 27.9%:
Not everyone is doing badly it seems… The Providence Business News discusses the results here.

Addendum:
(Brown) Attrition, layoffs to cut 60 positions:
One of the area’s biggest and most significant employers starts to cut back. The Brown Daily News has the information.

  • Re. the NYT article, how come it’s blatantly obvious to everyone except RI’ers that our government is vastly beyond our capacity to support it? And yet every time I hear anyone speak of Carcieri, it’s with a nasty epithet attached to his name.

Nobody has to like it, but Rhody needs to slash government dramatically just to get spending back in line with what we can afford, and THEN once we’re finished slashing we need to slash a lot more so we can get our tax burden back into a reasonable territory where we’re not driving away businesses large and small.

If you want extensive social services, then you need extensive economic activity to support them. Seems like most RI Democrats can’t wrap their minds around this idea.
