Greater City Providence

Me no understand

So I (well, not I, it’s from the email list, not a personal message) get this email from the Mayor:

Dear friends of Providence,

Today I made a decision that will allow me to place all of my focus and energy on protecting the gains we’ve made in Providence and seeing our city through the current economic crisis. I hope you will take a few minutes to view the linked video I made to share my belief in the importance of moving Providence forward during this critical time and some of my hopes for the future.

Sincerely,
David N. Cicilline
Mayor

OK, I’m concerned with my city, I have 4 minutes to watch a YouTube and see what the Mayor is up to, so here it is:

So, OK. Yay, I guess. But what exactly was this decision he made? I guess he’s running for re-election, but he never actually said, “today I announce my intention to run for re-election as the Mayor of the great city of Providence.” He said he’s done a bunch of wonderful things over the last 6 years. The 195 land will be fun to develop. He wants to take a ride on some crazy new streetcar thing-a-ma-bobs… Am I missing something?

  • I think the announcement is that he’s not going to run for Governer like many people thought he would and instead is going to continue as Mayor of Providence.

  • I watched the video, read the email and wondered the same thing. What exactly is he saying here? Is he being coy? Playing hard to get? Whatever it is, color me unimpressed. If you can’t get your message out with email AND video, then you need either a new message or a new press person.

  • What a strange video… It’s actually quite good in form and tone (and has the long overdue, but kinda out of left field at this point, mention of mass transit and even streetcars) but the details don’t dovetail with those he otherwise recently announced and it doesn’t quite come across as the inspirational mayoral campaign kickoff I think it’s supposed to be, if for no other reason than the campaign isn’t actually announced in the video. Should be an interesting election season, though.

  • This video was actually intended to be the kickoff for his new book “How To Speak For Four Minutes And Not Say Anything”, he’ll be signing copies at Borders next week (apparently, Symposium refused to even carry it).

  • From what I read on other blogs, there was another email that went out, although apparently not to Jef that actually explained he was running for re-election to his mayoral seat, and not running for governor. Curious that not everyone got the same email, hm? I wonder what’s up with that.
