Greater City Providence

Kansas City Light Rail Video

This video illustrates nicely the connections between transit and land-use. The portion that shows the redeveloped “excess surface parking” immediately brought to mind Providence’s own, Parking Lot District.

Most people do not know that Light Rail is a land use issue – and not just about transportation. This video shows how pedestrian friendly developments are created around station locations, making light rail a catalyst for positive change in the community. We concepted, animated and edited this video for Kansas City Public Television as part of their Imagine KC

  • I beg to differ, here in PVD, we build college dorms and unusable park space around rapid transit (/still bitter about Capital Cove)

I think Jef needs to get to work on one of these for PVD, that video editing can’t be that difficult 🙂

  • If someone wants to send me to a class to learn how to make sexy little videos like that, I will sit in my attic all day, eating ice cream and making videos.

  • I want to move there. … Can’t wait for the day I catch a streetcar on Hope Street. Oh, the possibilities.

  • Wow, for New Urbanists/Transit folks, that video is almost erotic…

It’s extremely well done and illustrates its points nicely. It’s interesting that KC is doing this. I recently met a KC native and she was saying that while it’s a pretty city, that with the exception of the open market area of KC, there really isn’t much in the way of street life and poor mass transit, so apparently they have a way to go. There certainly seems to be some momentum there, however, as KC has become one of the young, progressive, “magnet” cities in its region in the last decade or so…

  • Thanks for the kind words on the video. It was a truly amazing project to work on. For those who are curious, it was produced by 4 artists in our shop in a little over 30 days. The response in KC was very positive. Now, if only we could make it real in as little time.

Amazing work. Very powerful way to capture the transformative power of Transit Oriented Development. Now if only Light Rail could make us all 10 years younger in addition to 20 lbs lighter;)
