WiFi Plaza?

wifi_plaza

I received a Facebook notification from Greater Kennedy Plaza today announcing upcoming events in the Plaza, at the bottom of the notification I saw this:

Also, enjoy the free wi-fi anywhere in Kennedy Plaza all day, every day!

Yay! I’m not heading down there in the monsoon to test it, and I can’t find any mention on the Greater Kennedy Plaza website, but there it is. Has anyone tried out the WiFi in the Plaza? It hasn’t exactly been the best of weather lately to hang out in the Plaza and surf the web.

Oh, and here’s all those events coming up in the Plaza area:

Please join us tomorrow – Tuesday, June 23rd from 11:30am-1:30pm for Public Square Tuesday! On the sidewalk along Burnside Park, non-profit groups present their missions with an interactive approach in this fun, urban setting. Joining us this week will be the Blackstone Valley Community Action Program, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Wednesday, June 24th 12:00-1:00pm – Noon Tunes! Grab your lunch and join us in Burnside Park for some East African Folk music by Tesfamichael Weldesellasie! Free!

Thursday, June 25th 12:15-1:00pm – Beach Body Bootcamp! An intense (and FREE) 45-minute workout in Burnside Park with a personal trainer from Boston Sports Clubs! They’ll even let you use their shower afterwards!

Thursday, June 25th 5:00-7:00pm – Burnside Park Music Series and Beer Garden hosted by Trinity Brewhouse! Wind down after work to some Electric Relaxation tunes performed by AfroSonic Collective / BlackDove! Also, grab a beer in Trinity Brewhouse’s beer garden to enjoy while you listen!

Friday, June 26th 11:00am-2:00pm – Farmers Market! Stock up on fruits and vegetables made in RI – or grab lunch from one of the delicious vendors serving up Indian and Jamaican food, plus cupcakes and pies!

  • Are you sure that it’s not just a sophisticated ploy to get people to bring their laptop computers and iPhones and such to Kennedy Plaza, so they can be more easily mugged? Just a thought.

PS If you have a Starbucks card, you can get 2 hours of WiFi free at the Starbucks at the bottom of the Biltmore. Much safer.

  • Where did I write that story about my friend Len in KP that starts “So there’s this guy walking around Kennedy Plaza with a hatchet in his hand and…”

    But seriously, folks…

I was at a meeting in one of the Bank of America training rooms in whatever the hell tower that is. They’re so freaked about Internet security that there is no guest wifi system. If you don’t have a 3G card, you’re screwed. So the IT tech says, “well if it were cloudy, you could probably use the Kennedy Plaza wifi.”

I know, right? There was a day that wasn’t cloudy. Good times…

  • I was at the RI Bar Association Annual Meeting on Friday. My Backberry was broken so I hooked up my computer to go online and check e-mail. From the walkway connecting the Westin to the Convention Center I was able to pick up the Downcity Free Wifi. It worked great and was super fast. No complaints here.

  • Oh sweet! I’ll have to try it out next time I’m down there. I get down there pretty frequently. Now they just need to push it into the neighborhoods.

  • I was in kennedy plaza with my iphone and the wifi signal was too weak for my phone to get online.

  • Now that you mention it, I remember having that problem over the summer too and actually catching the Peter Pan buses’ wifi rather than the parks. I’ll ask around to find out if we can have it addressed.
