RIAC Intermodal Facility naming contest for college and university students

Colleges and Universities Invited to Participate in Intermodal Marketing Contest
Rhode Island Airport Corporation Launches Contest

Warwick, Rhode Island ( March 3, 2010) – The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC), together with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has launched a contest to develop a branding/marketing name for the Intermodal Facility.

The contest seeks to engage students in Rhode Island Colleges and Universities with concentrations in business, marketing and/or communications in creating a branding of the Intermodal Facility. Names and taglines must take into account both local and regional feel and convey multi-modal transportation connectivity to Green Airport. The Intermodal will integrate trains, planes, buses, cars and planes. This is not to be confused with any future proposal for a formal name to the public facility.

Students are asked to provide a name and tagline accompanied by an essay of 1000 words or less with a rationale for their submission. Finalists will be selected and asked to present proposals before a selection committee.

“The intermodal will provide enhanced regional connectivity to and from the airport. By developing a brand name to market the facility, it will allow for travelers, who are not familiar with the area, to visualize where they are when they arrive in Warwick in proximity to Providence, Boston, Wickford and points beyond,” said Kevin Dillon, President and CEO. “We see this as an opportunity to engage our college students to develop a creative and useful identifier for the facility to be used for marketing purposes.”

The winning entry will be announced in late April and will be recognized at the formal opening events. A small prize will be awarded to the marketing department of the respective College or University. The name will be used on all marketing materials.

More information on the naming contest can be found at pvdairport.com or by calling 691-2278.

About the Project
The Intermodal is a collaborative effort of Project Partners the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC), Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The facility is scheduled to open in September 2010 and will provide multi-modal transportation with the connectivity of planes, trains, buses and cars. The facility will serve MBTA commuter trains traveling between Warwick, Providence and Boston, utilizing Amtrak rails; and eventually Wickford Junction in North Kingstown, RI. The project is broken into four major areas of design and construction- the Terminal End Improvements (TEI); the Skywalk; the Customer Service Operations Building (CSO) and the Garage and Fueling Platform. These components are being built concurrently while still maintaining an active airport terminal and surrounding roadways.

  • With New England Tech moving its nearby Warwick campus to East Greenwich, there will be a good amount available land to develop near the new Intermodal Station. Warwick and the Airport should start working together now on planning and looking for potential tenants/purchasers that would benefit from and support the success of this new facility.
