Stop by 110 Westminster Street right now to let the Lots in Limbo folks know what you would like to see instead of vacant lots in Downtown Providence.

Then head down to Grant’s Block at 8pm to see “Beyond Motor City” on the wall.

  • Does the 16 acres include only the recent stopped demolition/construction sites or does it include all Downtown underutilized land that would also include previously empty lots and surface parking lots?

  • The Lots in Limbo folks had a metric which they used to come up with (I think they said) 16 acres. This included vacant land, stalled projects and land such as surface parking which is not vacant strictly speaking, but under-utilized. I’ve heard others come up with numbers around about 20 acres. The unbuilt land in Downcity about equals the amount of land coming available through the relocation of Route 195, and I think that does not include land such as around the hospitals, in the Jewelry District, and undeveloped parcels in Capital Center.

Our city is rather well developed and dense, but the amount of under utilized land is actually rather stunning when you add it all together.

  • It would be interesting to conduct an actual survey for each Downtown neighborhood. The hospital area, the 95 canyon, and the pieces of neighborhoods just west of 95 and the South Main/Fox Point strip might be included since their characteristics and adjacency seem to function more like part of the CBD. This would seem to be a natural for CPD or ProvPlan. Maybe a survey already exists?
