Providence Geeks, “Geeks for Good” Food Drive, 38 Studios, Dec. 15

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010, 5:30 – 8:30pm
AS220, 115 Empire Street, Providence, RI
FREE (buy your own food and drink – it’s cheap)

Providence Geeks is closing out 2010, with a bang. Our December Geek Dinner features the first public presentation by soon-to-be-Providence-based interactive entertainment company – 38 Studios. Also, with BatchBlue’s leadership, we’ll be having our 3rd annual “Geeks for Good” Food Drive (i.e. bring food! details here).

In one of the most talked-about local events of the year, the company founded by world-champion baseball player Curt Schilling, closed a $75 million bond offering and announced its relocation to Rhode Island. Join CEO Jen MacLean and Studio General Manager Gavian Whishaw as they discuss the company’s games and strategy, approach to complex project development, and plans for how the new studio can support the knowledge economy in Rhode Island.

Note: Baseball fans, Curt will only be present in spirit, not body.

Please RSVP at Facebook – and while you’re there please join our Facebook group. And if you want to join our very-low-volume email announcement send an email to Jack Templin with your name and affiliation.

Just like his participation in the loan that WE gave him. Zero personal participation by Schilling. Z-E-R-O!

  • I’m very happy he didn’t show. That event is already getting past the capacity of the venue.

One Frymaster exclusive. I didn’t get to ask in the public Q&A, but afterwards I spent a few minutes with Jen MacLean asking here about the cultural fit between our little burg and the 38 Studios chairman.

If you don’t know, he’s quite the Ann Coulter fan and has spoken out on political and social issues. This post from his 38 Pitches blog from 2008 gives you a feel for the content and his true grasp of issues. When ever somebody writes:

I could care less what color they are, yellow, red, white, black, green, whatever, the color is the least relevant issue to any of this.

Well, you know what that means…

The good news is that the CEO, while aware of this, says that there’s none of it in the shop. They have gay and transgendered employees who, I was told, are very happy. (In fact, she claimed that one of the gays was a close and trusted friend to the chairman.) She was highly aware of where she was politically and believed that the company employees and management were a good cultural fit for RI. She said she could not foresee a profitable 38 Studios contributing to candidates that did not reflect the employees’ values.

How about your IP company siding with The Mouse and supporting regressive copyright legislation? On that topic, she was actually woefully ignorant, I hate to say. I advised her that Lawrence Lessig and Shep Fairey had given a talk in that very room just a couple of months before, and she seemed to understand what that meant.

    We shall see…
