As reported by the Providence Business News and Brown’s Continuing Education website, the University has begun work on 200 Dyer Street.

According to Brown, the Continuing Education office will occupy 22,000 square feet on the building’s first floor. CE plans to move down from College Hill to the Jewelry District building in January.

The building will feature:

  • The educational space will include seminar classrooms and meeting rooms, some with multimedia and lecture-capture capabilities.
  • The administrative side of the building will contain offices, conference rooms, and breakout areas for Continuing Education faculty and staff.
  • Multi-media studio, control room, and editing suite
  • Lounge and café area

The building most recently housed the City’s Department of Inspections & Standards which recently moved to the City’s new Administrative Building at 444 Westminster Street.

There were a number of proposals for this site back during the boom times, circa 2005, including a 9-story office building and a 200-foot office building with a residential/hotel component. Needless to say, all those plans were waylaid by the recession.

Full disclosure: The project architect, Durkee, Brown, Viveiros, Werenfels Architects is my employer.
