  • I would just note the attention to parking, and the coordination with RIDOT, but no mention of RIPTA in this work plan, even though the proposed streetcar was to go thru the district.

Part of the same old problem, the big-shots don’t much consider transit while they do arrange for enough parking so that transit cannot succeed but not enough parking to compete with the easy free parking of the suburbs. This strategy has not generally been succesful in reviving central Providence.

  • Even if not for the streetcar, buses go through this area. RIDOT is pretty much not receptive to any modern street building or traffic calming techniques such as neck downs or bulb outs for bus stops or raised crosswalks or anything that does not make 12 foot high speed auto traffic lanes a priority. We have a remarkable opportunity to build a whole city district with human scaled streets, what do you think RIDOT will do with that opportunity?

  • hello Jeff, I wanted to invite you to the presentation I will make at the Music Mansion, 88 Meeting Street, Providence, RI 02906 of the model (6’x6′) that I designed which integrates the entire downcity area including but not limited to the I 195 surplus land. The meeting is at 5:30 pm, champagne and hors d’oeuvre will be served. This is a 20 year Master Plan for our city center.

  • Well it is already the parking lot district so why not change it…..

My current thinking is that smarter more enlightened people will develop compact street level solutions using existing buildings next to this project and this effort will languish in search of a white knight suburban developer. This may limit the environmental and infrastructure damage to the city but cripple the states goal of an actual economic recovery.

  • Hey does anyone know what’s going to become of the big building they just tore down on globe and Eddy? Haven’t heard anything about it, but it had fences around it for months. The streetcar would wrap around this, or could even go through it.

  • I forgot that was happening, it is for the Victory Finishing Technology Site which was reviewed by the City Plan Commission on February 15, 2011.

On the agenda, the project was described:

    4. Case No. 10-025MA – Redevelopment of former Victory Finishing Technology site [145 Globe Street] (Master Plan Approval)
Redevelopment of former Victory Finishing Technology Site and proximate lots for a mixed use development for research and development, educational and residential uses3. A parking structure and landscaping for neighboring lots is also proposed – for action. (AP 21 Lots 326-328, 332, 333, 336, 353 and 399. AP 22 Lots 83 and 352. Downtown D-2 Overlay)

I haven’t really been keeping up with that project and probably should try to gather some more information. There was talk for a while about the streetcar going straight through that site from Chestnut Street to Eddy Street, but RIPTA was worried about becoming liable for site contamination if they did that.
