RI Bike has arranged the bike commuters breakfast and coffee, courtesy of Whole Foods Market, RABAR, and New Harvest Coffee Roasters, as well as the following:
In the last week, we’ve had Mayor Tavares agree to ride to and speak at approximately 8AM. We’re hopeful that he’ll be able to share information about an exciting request from local cyclists that he is considering.  We’ll also have Melanie Army from the City Planning Department on hand to talk about development of the next Providence Bike Plan and Rep. Art Handy to present a resolution from the state legislature declaring May 18th 2012 Bike To Work Day in Rhode Island.
- Onsite bicycle mechanic services are being provided by REI from 6:30 to 9:30.
- Raffle of donated items to benefit RIBIKE will be held, including a fashionable rainhood from CLEVERHOOD, bike bag and Donkey Boxes from Legend Bicycle, Bontrager floor pump from Caster’s, Bicycle Jewelry from Recycle-A-Bike and more!
Other activities:
- Product demonstrations from Caster’s Bicycles, Dynamic Bicycles.
- Get photographed at the ZipCar photobooth with your commuter gear or bike commuter friends.
- Learn how to combine Bike with Bus with RIPTA Rack and Ride

People who walk to work use even less resources than bike commuters, and no one ever gives them free breakfast.
I just saw a gaggle of bikers, no doubt on their ways to work, riding down Smith street with a police (bike) escort.
Probably the Mayor.
Indeed, the rest of us rarely get the police escort.
The mayor showed up on a Brompton bike. Well played.
Police (bike) escort: Bicycle or motorbike?
Either way, I guess it is an improvement over the day Mayor Cicilline rode his bike, clad in spandex, with the black SUV following to bring along his change of clothes.
This is at least the third time Mayor Tavares has been at bike-to-work day events and instead of being cynical about his police escort, should be credited with promoting bicycling in the city, and this time, announcing the creation of a city bike/ped advisory committee.
Similarly David Cicilline, as Mayor and in Congress has also promoted biking, and his adminstration at least began the implementation of bike plans, including various share-the-road signage and the bike lanes on Blackstone Blvd. To my knowedge, previous mayors, Cianci, Paolino, Doorley never showed the slightest interest or ever lifted a finger on behalf of the bicyclists here. I think those in favor of improving bicycling should show some appreciation of political leaders who at least try to help.
