Greater City ProvidenceA meeting of the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission will be held at the office of Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, 315 Iron Horse Way, Suite 101, Providence, Rhode Island, on MONDAY, January 14, 2013, beginning at 5:00 p.m., for the following purposes:
I. Public Session
Call to Order: The Chairperson
- Welcome by Chairperson: Chairperson Colin Kane.
- To approve the public session minutes of the meetings held on November 19, 2012 and December 10, 2012. (Tab 1.)
- Engineering and Permitting Status Update.
- Briefing by RIDOT on Road Construction Schedule and Contract 15 (East Side) Activities.
- Bond and Land Acquisition update, including snow and landscape maintenance contract recommendations/property insurance.
- Q1/Q2 Workplan and Action Item Discussion, including market perspective and planning activities.
- Legal Activities Discussion (regulatory development, internal policies, etc.).
- Executive Director Search Update.
- Schedule and Protocol for Interested Parties.
- Chairman’s Report/Agenda for January 29, 2013 Meeting.
- Vote to Adjourn.
II. Executive Session
To consider and act upon such matters as may be considered at a meeting closed to the public pursuant to the Open Meetings Law, specifically matters permitted to be so considered under subsection (7), (investment of public funds) of Rhode Island General Laws, Section 42-46-5(a) (the Open Meetings Law).
This is the sidewalk on Chestnut Street on January 4th, about a week after the snow storm.
They’ve been discussing this issue for almost literally a full year and still can’t figure it out.
Watching a channel 10 view of the I-195 highway bridge all lit up, I noticed a dark blob in the way before I realized it was the Point St. bridge. This 1927 blue collar neighborhood bridge deserves more respect. Light it up to reveal a piece of Providence’s history. I know it’s just a gray tressel, but in R.I. that’s cool. It would brighten the pedestrian sidewalk and add a new reflection on the river that would add to the highway view. Maybe put some flags (U.S & R.I.) on each side and light them up too. It’s the grand daddy of all the “new” bridges. We should respect our elders.
I think Tommy’s suggestion for appropriate lighting and decoration on the Point St bridge has merit and should be investigated, but I note the I-195 Redevelopment Commission is another public body without
“public comment” on its meeting agendas so our suggestions are mainly among ourselves. Similarly about any complaint about the disgraceful failure to accomodate pedestrians with regard to snow removal.
Barry, I think they do listen some, especially about the snow removal issue. Following Jef’s post last year, it quickly became a point of their discussion. A few months ago they issued a state RFP bid notice to contract for the mowing of the temporary fields and the clearing of sidewalks of snow throughout all of the 195 land and adjacent streets.
The Point Street bridge lighting is a great idea. I don’t believe that Point Street Bridge is in the purview of the 195 commission, but rather RIDOT. It always comes down to a question of money. If a private money were found it could be done. If the city wanted it eventually the money would be found.
Another structure that should be lit is the upright railroad bridge at the east end of the tunnel on the Seekonk River.
It’s unknown if the snow removal/mowing RFP was ever awarded. From Jef’s photo obviously not yet.
