Garbage and recycling collection will not take place today, Friday, January 3, 2014. If your regular trash pickup day is Thursday, your trash will be picked up tomorrow, Saturday, January 4, 2014. If your regular trash pickup day is Friday, your trash will be picked up on Monday, January 6, 2014.
Trash pickup will be delayed by one day next week:
- Monday pickup will be Tuesday
- Tuesday pickup will be Wednesday
- Wednesday pickup will be Thursday
- Thursday pickup will be Friday
- Friday pickup will be Saturday

Providence Public Schools Closed Tomorrow, Jan. 3 – Parking Ban Begins at Midnight
Residents urged to exercise caution during frigid conditions
PROVIDENCE, RI – In preparation for a winter snow storm forecast to bring frigid temperatures and leave up to eight inches of snow in Providence, Providence Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, January 3, 2013.
Mayor Angel Taveras has declared a citywide parking ban beginning at midnight tonight. The parking ban will remain in effect until further notice.
Snowfall is expected to peak in intensity during the evening hours tonight and will continue through tomorrow morning. The storm will be accompanied by frigid temperatures and wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour that will greatly reduce visibility and make extended outdoor exposure dangerous.
The Department of Public Works has prepared all equipment and personnel to respond to the storm. The City’s Emergency Operations Center has been partially activated with Providence Emergency Management staff.

CANCELLATIONS
All Providence Public Schools afterschool activities scheduled for today are canceled. Providence Public Schools will be closed and all afterschool activities are canceled for tomorrow, January 3.
All Providence recreation centers are closed today.
PARKING BAN
A citywide parking ban will be in effect from midnight tonight until further notice. Cars in violation of the citywide parking ban will be ticketed and towed to ensure that roadways can be plowed. Cars parked in school parking lots overnight will also be ticketed and towed.
OVERNIGHT PARKING
Residents with overnight parking permits and all residents are reminded that they are responsible for removing their cars from the street during a parking ban. Vehicles parked on the street in violation of the citywide parking ban will be ticketed and towed to ensure that roadways can be plowed.

CITY OFFICES
City Hall will remain open on Friday, January 3. However, Providence Municipal Court will be closed tomorrow.
RESIDENTS URGED TO TAKE CAUTION DURING DANGEROUSLY COLD TEMPERATURES; KEEP PETS INDOORS; CHECK ON ELDERLY NEIGHBORS
Exposure to extreme cold weather can cause hypothermia and frostbite. If you suspect a person is suffering from frostbite or hypothermia, bring him or her someplace warm and seek medical help immediately. Symptoms include:
Hypothermia: includes slurred speech, sluggishness, confusion, dizziness, shallow breathing, unusual behavior, and slow, irregular heartbeat.
Frostbite: includes gray, white or yellow skin discoloration, numbness, and waxy feeling skin.

Wear a hat or hood to keep heat from escaping the body

SNOW REMOVAL
Property owners are required to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, catch basins, fire hydrants and pedestrian ramps adjacent to their property within 8 hours after snow stops falling. Residents are asked to take care not to shovel snow onto roadways after streets have been plowed. Fines ranging from $20 to $500 will be imposed on residents not in compliance.
By City Ordinance, businesses and residents must not place snow removed by plowing or shoveling into public roadways and sidewalks. Fines ranging from $20 to $500 will be imposed on residents not in compliance.
Motorists are advised not to double park on streets, and not to park within eight feet of fire hydrants. Blocking fire hydrants and causing any delay of fire, police and other emergency vehicles is a serious public safety hazard.
For fire safety purposes, residents are urged not to rebury fire hydrants after they have been dug out.
DRIVING CONDITIONS
Current weather reports indicate that this winter storm is likely to present hazardous driving conditions. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution and to stay off roadways whenever possible during the storm.

You know the rule about ejecting snow into the street is sort of stupid in Providence. Where properties come RIGHT UP to the sidewalk with no yards to speak of and no place to put all that snow.
If the city were smart they’d remove the snow on the streets via bucket loader – then you could get all the ejecta into a dump trucks and move on, like they do in Montreal.
Deaths or injuries due to plow having to drive around parking ban violator = Zero
Pedestrians killed or injured walking in streets past obstructed sidewalks = happens every winter
The city press release is insulting BS. Look around you to see what the priorities are.
If the city actually cared about its sidewalks or its pedestrians, DPW would be clearing them at the same time it clears the roads. Unfortunately, the city doesn’t care, so you get stupid, arbitrary nonsense like this.
Placing the impetus on residents with no care or concern given to those residents’ physical health, and issuing higher fines for shoveling snow onto the street than for refusing to shovel out the city’s sidewalks for them is just legal speak for “We don’t care about you. This is your problem, not ours.”
It’s pathetic. There’s no other word for it, really.
