  • There are no consequences when a motorist kills a pedestrian, even in a crosswalk, unless the driver is drunk or does a hi tand run, because there is a loophole in our laws that for any consequences youd have to prove that the driver knew they were driving dangerously and deliberately did it anyway.

The safety community has to addess this legislatively by clsoing the loophole, perhaps with a “vulnerable road user” law that penalizes careless driving that leads to death or serious injury

  • Rhode Island’ laws are ridiculous!!! When it comes to motorist hitting and killing pedestrians!! I am the sister of Kathleen Carpenter who was killed on a SIDEWALK in Cumberland!!! The driver gets nothing but a slap on the hand!! Whatever happened to Failure to Control your Vehicle at all time law???? I feel we need to change the laws Massachusetts and New Hampshire have much tougher laws ! My family and I did not know that our laws were this bad until this happened to us!! Anyone know how to get a petition started or maybe a similar story I have tried writing letter to many politicians without any response THEY don’t care until it happens to one of their family members!! Feeling frustrated

  • Carolyn, if you ae willing to help in legislative efforts to close this loophole (see my comments above) please call me at 401 353-6536. I’m legislative chair of the RI Bicycle Coalition and participate in the Traffic Sfety Coalition which is discussing a legislative agenda.
