Mayor-elect Elorza Announces One Providence Inaugural Weekend

Providence, RI – Mayor-elect Jorge O. Elorza today announced his One Providence Inaugural Weekend – an exciting program of inaugural events to showcase Providence, promote community service, and celebrate the occasion as Elorza takes the oath of office as Providence’s 38th Mayor on Monday, January 5, 2015.

“The One Providence Inaugural Weekend is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our capital city and to encourage giving back to our community through community service,” Mayor-elect Elorza said. “I look forward to joining with residents from across our city and state to celebrate the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the City of Providence.”

Inauguration Weekend kicks off on Saturday, January 3, as Mayor-elect Elorza asks residents to celebrate their civic pride and give back to our community through volunteerism by participating in his One Providence Day of Service. Canned goods and non-perishable food items will be collected for the Rhode Island Food Bank at venues across the city. Mayor- elect Elorza also encourages people of all ages to spend part of their day on Saturday, January 3 volunteering for their favorite organization or community group.

Information about where to donate food items and how to sign up to volunteer during the One Providence Day of Service will be available on Mayor-elect Elorza’s transition website, transitionpvd.com.

On Sunday, January 4, the Providence Children’s Museum will host the Children’s Inaugural Celebration. In addition to the Children’s Museum’s regular exhibits, the celebration will include a program of fun activities presented by Providence Youth Arts Collaborative, including the Manton Avenue Project, CityArts, Everett Theatre Company, Community Music Works, and AS220 Youth.

Mayor-elect Elorza’s public Inauguration Ceremony will be held at 2pm on Monday, January 5 on the steps of City Hall. Following the Inauguration Ceremony, Mayor Elorza will host a reception on the second floor of City Hall.

At 7pm, Mayor Elorza will host the One Providence Inaugural Celebration at the Cranston Street Armory.

“We are particularly pleased to hold the One Providence Inaugural Celebration at the Cranston Street Armory, where there hasn’t been an inaugural celebration in decades,” he said. “We are planning an especially enjoyable evening that highlights Providence’s world-class artistic, cultural and culinary scene.”

All of these events are free and open to the public. Tickets will need to be reserved for those who want to attend the One Providence Inaugural Celebration. Tickets can be reserved at Mayor-elect Elorza’s transition website, transitionpvd.com.

Saturday, January 3

  • 10am – 2pm: One Providence Day of Community Service, locations to be determined

Sunday, January 4

  • 12 – 3pm: Children’s Inaugural Celebration, Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South Street

Monday, January 5 – Inauguration Day

  • 1:30pm: Seating opens for Inauguration Ceremony, steps of Providence City Hall
  • 2pm: Inauguration Ceremony
  • 3:30pm: Reception with Mayor Elorza, City Hall, second floor
  • 7pm: One Providence Inaugural Celebration, Cranston Street Armory, 310 Cranston Street
