Providence Police arrested a woman Sunday morning after she hit a pedestrian with her vehicle and fled the scene.
Tammy Moreira, 44, of Providence, was driving on Elmwood Avenue around 1:30 a.m. when she struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Elmwood and Ontario Street before fleeing the scene.

What does that matter Jef Nickerson? He was in a crosswalk.
Why would you even add that? Could it be that a 49 word news article wasn’t long enough so you needed to pad the post?
When RIDOT builds a city street as a highway, with maximizing automobile throughput as the primary goal, with some little paint in the road offering a hope and a prayer to pedestrians, we shouldn’t be surprised that people drive on that roadway as if it were a highway, and don’t notice the person hoping and praying in the little paint area.
It does not excuse the driver’s actions, but RIDOT bears some responsibility for poor design.
When they built Elmwood and Reservoir Avenues up as highways they were the primary routes connecting Providence to points south. It must have been gnarly. After I-95, it took 50 years to begin (barely) to reconsider the design of those streets. That is the kind of inertia that DOTs are famous for!
