Join CNU New England for a discussion of the Providence Streetcar project as well as insights from world-class transit systems. Our conversation will explore the potential impacts to Providence, the unique opportunities and challenges for streetcars in New England’s towns and cities, and lessons learned from cities across the world.

Martina Haggerty, Associate Director of Special Projects for the City of Providence Department of Planning and Development, will present current plans for the Providence Streetcar. The planned modern streetcar route will connect Rhode Island’s largest employment hubs, several world-class institutions, more than 50,000 people working in the urban core, numerous arts and events venues, and the State’s two main transportation hubs, while passing directly through the City’s key redevelopment area made available by the recent relocation of Interstate 195.

Dr. Norman Garrick, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Connecticut will discuss lessons from streetcar systems around the world. Dr. Garrick specializes in the planning and design of transit, streets and highways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and parking policies. His writings and research have been featured in The Atlantic Cities, Planetizen, The Washington Post, The Denver Post, and The Hartford Courant. This year he was a Visiting Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
