  • ProJo: Providence OKs Brown’s new performing arts center and dorm with wellness facilities

The City Plan Commission voted unanimously Monday night in favor of amendments to Brown University’s master plan that would add two new buildings at the College Hill campus: a performing arts center and a student wellness center and residence hall.

Commission members praised Brown for responding to community concerns, voiced at the commission’s December meeting, about the university’s earlier plan to raze or move five historic buildings to make room for the performing arts center.

Although it will include a 500-seat theater, the 94,000-square-foot arts center will mainly be an academic building, according to Joseph “Butch” Rovan, the faculty director for the arts initiative, and it is “paramount” that the building be located in the campus center, he said.
