Construction Progress

I took a walk at lunchtime and took some photos of some buildings currently under construction:

  • How close does The Commons at Providence Station come to the train tracks? Any updates on The Procaccianti Group’s hotel project on Fountain St? Last I heard was that they were trying to obtain more tax relief above and over what was already secured.

  • The hotel on Fountain st is under construction, last I saw they were pouring the foundation.

  • I’ve seen heavy machinery onsite, but they were idle. I know The Procaccianti Group was looking for more tax incentives from the state since they believed that the project had or would become more costly.

  • If I ran things, there would be a bike/ped route from a footbridge over the river just south of that”Commons at Providence Station” to the station; a mid block crosswalk across Canal Street, linking to Roger Williams Memorial. This would be a pleasant, direct walking or biking route to the station from College Hill, etc.

  • Wasn’t the developers of the Cove 1 project suppose to make improvement to the stone wall along the stream and put in a bridge from Canal St to the complex?

  • There should be a special hall of shame for breakers of promises like that.
examples – burying the powerlines at India Point Park was supposed to be a condition of the I-195 move. A downtown cinema was supposed to be a condition of building the mall with a cinema.

  • Right, there was suppose to be a Sundance Theater built I think at the corners of Washington & Mathewson. Or was it Westminster & Union St @ Grant’s Block? The power line thingy has been raging on for over 10 years. HOWEVER…………….

Can you spot the power lines in this picture? The Providence Preservation Society invites the public to show their support for burying the India Point power lines this Tuesday at a hearing with the Siting Board.

The Board will hear arguments on the 27th at 1pm and will rule at 2pm on whether to accept the motion to stay its decision until the Court rules. “Please come, bring a friend, and a sign. The Board notices when we fill the room with supporters of burial.”
More information at Friends of India Point Park.

  • Impressed by the elegance of the Homewood Suites. It isn’t a grand building by any means, but it softens the landscape from the hardness of the Citizens Bank Tower (aka the Darth Vader building).

Not so impressed with the buildings along the river by the train station. Very blocky and undefined. They don’t fit into any neighborhood context, they just sit there. Also, there doesn’t seem to be much access for pedestrians in, around or through these areas. Will there be a riverwalk promenade in front of these buildings?

I agree with Andrew I, it would be great to have a bike/walking bridge that spanned the canal to the Memorial and mirroring the one being built on South Water St.
