Rendering of new residence hall next to Nickerson Green at RISD
Rhode Island School of Design has started its first newly built residence hall in 30 years.
The project is designed by RISD alumnus Nader Tehrani. His firm, NADAAA, has designed a 43,500-square-foot building that will house as many as 153 students over six floors.
The building is part of a larger quad-enhancement project and will include amenities such as work rooms, makerspace, bike rooms, a shared kitchen and an outdoor terrace.

I expect a lot better from RISD, although I’m not sure why after the Chase Center. This is a gross looking building.
Agree, should we expect RISD to be more design-forward in their projects? They should be building more cutting edge buildings.

There are probably some financial constraints which are limiting the potential exuberance of this building. I do wish there was more integration between the building and the surrounding landscape. I also don’t understand why many modern architects seem to think introducing one skew angle and using irregular window placement hides the fact that their buildings are essentially rectangular boxes.
The same architects also designed the remodeled RISD library inside the hospital trust building. That project is really quite exceptional. I don’t think this is an issue of the architects skill, but maybe more so the school’s finances.
A truly skilled architect would be able to make a simple, attractive building. I’m specifically referring to the metal cladding and the irregular window placement. Those two elements seem to pop up on every boring uninspired building anywhere these days.

I’m not sure why they keep referring to this project as the first new residence hall in 30 years. RISD converted 15 Westminster to student housing just 12 or 13 years ago.
First newly constructed residence building I guess.
