CBC brings kayaks to Providence

Community Boating Boathouse

The Providence Community Boating Center has announced that kayaking will be added to their programming this spring!

The simplicity of kayaking as an entry-level sport for anyone makes it attractive to get outside, get moving, and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

FREE recreational kayaking is now included with adult memberships! Paddle one day as a trial/guest member, or all season, + FREE guest! We want you to paddle with a friend, so you get up to 2 kayaks/ trip.

New to paddling? Join us for some basic instruction and a guided tour. FREE guided “RiverRomp” tours offer youth & families a healthy, active alternative to TV, video, and other indoor, static activities.

CBC will, of course, still be offering recreational sailing and sailing lessons this spring, but now a membership will also offer kayak usage and kayaking lessons!

An adult membership for the entire season costs only $195*, and basically gives you access to boats 7 days a week – with no boat rental fees and no maintenance obligations.

Only in town for a day, or worried about commitment? CBC offers a one-day pass for $75 – a great way to spend an afternoon before checking out a Waterfire.

More details on the CBC website including the 2012 Membership Application (PDF)

*packages and discounts available, too!

Community Boating Center Partners with Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean for ROV Submarine Demo

July 7, 2011 • 6pm-8pm

Providence, RI – The Community Boating Center (CBC) has announced that it will host a public ROV submarine demo program run by the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean on 7/7/11, 6-8 pm, at CBC in India Point Park, Providence.

The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean is dedicated to finding and removing trash and marine debris from the ocean and working with waterfront groups, municipalities, non-profits, individuals, sailing centers, yacht clubs and people who want to protect the water to get cleaning and spread the word about marine debris, it’s prevention and how to be part of the solution.

The Rozalia team will be in Providence to spread the word, look for and clean up trash and demonstrate how their equipment works. Join Rozalia and Community Boating Center in Providence on 7/07 from 6-8 pm to learn about marine debris and how it affects the Providence River. This live demo will allow participants to observe the ROV and sonar flying around the river bottom.

John O’Flaherty, Executive Director, Community Boating Center commented “The Rozalia Project is a must-see experience. Similar to viewing a great movie or performance, its over before you are ready for it to be. The Rozalia team has an energy and welcoming presence that when combined with captivating technology like an ROV submersible or side-scan sonar produces a sure-bet winner of a program.”

Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean is a non-profit organization run by Rachael Z. Miller and James Lyne, both sailors who live (when not cleaning the ocean) in Vermont. Rozalia Project’s mothership is American Promise, Dodge Morgan’s famed circumnavigator, past sail training vessel for the US Naval Academy and now an ocean trash hunter. In addition to nets Rozalia uses a combination of ROV and sonar to search the sea floor for trash and debris. They are dedicated to clean oceans everywhere but are operating on the Northeast coast of the US in various public demo projects.

Community Boating Center (CBC) is a non-profit, 501c3 recreational organization offering all members of the community an opportunity to sail. Located in India Point Park, CBC provides outreach, sailing lessons and affordable access to the Providence waterfront. Gifts of cash or property to CBC may be treated as charitable donations for Federal Tax purposes.

Great Day for Community Boating

Picture from 2009's Regatta, despite the rain. This year: SUN!

It’s been 3 years since the CBC saw a sunny forecast for the annual Renaissance Regatta, but today looks like a lucky day.

Every year, the CBC tries to raise money to pay for its youth outreach and program initiatives by holding a regatta event. Companies, organizations, and individuals are invited to sponsor a team of sailors to compete in a series of sailing races during the day. Additionally, items are donated to CBC for a silent auction, and the public is invited to come cheer on the racers, participate in the auction, and go for a sailboat ride.

The event is TODAY and open to all. Tickets will be available at the door (discount for CBC members). Check out the CBC website or facebook page for more information.

See you there!

Come sail away…

Community Boating Center

Ok, so maybe you missed the last wine tasting… Maybe you even missed last weekend’s Boats, Birds, and BBQ event…

But starting June 1st, the Community Boating Center at India Point Park is officially open for business!

Have you ever driven over the Iway bridge and looked out over the water? Did you know that there is actually a park down there and an organization that will teach you how to sail?

This really is a great opportunity and a really fun way to spend a summer (think cheap stay-cation). Once you know how to sail, you can even take friends out sailing on one of CBC’s many new sailboats, or just come unwind with an after-work sail and watch the sun go down.

Community Boating is also a great way to meet people. Maybe you just finished college and you’re looking for a new scene. Maybe you just moved here for a new job and you’re looking for a new activity.

Come sail. If you don’t know how, they’ll teach you. It’s surprisingly affordable.

And don’t worry, there will be another wine tasting in June.

CBC Wine Tasting Series Continues

wine tasting

CBC Winetasting | Photo by M.Coolidge

Though it might be a little cooler out now and the days may be getting a little shorter, the Community Boating Center Boathouse at India Point Park is still open! Thursday, September 17 at 7pm there will be another CBC Wine Tasting Challenge, and this time we’re going with

Bold Barolo.

Barolo is a section of Piedmont, Italy, southwest of Alba. While wine in Italy is timeless, Barolo came about in the 1800s when the Marchesa Giulietta Colbert Falletti started making wine out of Nebbiolo grapes.

Nowadays, there are 3,000 acres of Nebbiolo producers in the towns of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Cherasco, Diano d’Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Novello, Roddi, and Serralunga d’Alba. The standard grape used in Barolo is still nebbiolo. Of the towns in the area, the “left” hills have compact soil and produce long lasting wines. The “right” hills have softer soil, making a wine that should be drunk more quickly. Both vineyards are regulated – Barolo vineyards can only grow around 3200k of grape/acre. The Piedmont area of Italy in general is ripe with history – ancient castles, legends of feuds and loves, beautiful hills and valleys. This is a great area to go both wine touring and vacationing.

Barolo alcoholic content is set at 13%. There are two grades of Barolo: * Standard Barolo, aged two years in the barrel, one in the bottle. * Riserva Barolo, aged three years in the barrel, one in the bottle. Barolo wines are typically a deep red. Their flavor is thick and complex. Some are flowery – violets, roses. Others are fruit, licorice, or oaky. Barolo should be drunk at 60F and can age for 5-10 years.

If you’ve never joined us before, it goes like this:

  • Your team (of up to 3 people) brings 3 bottles of the same Barolo
  • … and you each bring a suggested $10 donation for CBC
  • We serve 2 of your bottles (blindly) and put the 3rd one in the prize pool.
  • You vote on your favorite (remember, you can’t see the labels)
  • If your wine gets voted as favorite, you win all the 3rd bottles.
  • The more people that come, the bigger the prize pool!

For the rest of the details, check out the CBC event page. Remember, you can now get to the boathouse via the Gano St exit off of I-195.

See you there!
