2012 Rhode Island statewide ballot questions

We ran down the list of 11 City of Providence ballot questions in a previous post, here are the statewide questions on the November 6th ballot.

Update: All statewide ballot questions passed however, voters in Newport rejected a casino at Newport Grand.

QUESTION 1:

1. STATE CONSTITUTIONAL APPROVAL
(APPROVAL OF AN ACT AUTHORIZING STATE-OPERATED CASINO GAMING AT TWIN RIVER IN THE TOWN OF LINCOLN)

(Section 22 of Article VI of the Constitution)

Shall an act be approved which would authorize the facility known as “Twin River” in the town of Lincoln to add state-operated casino gaming, such as table games, to the types of gambling it offers?

(APPROVAL OF AN ACT AUTHORIZING STATE-OPERATED CASINO GAMING AT NEWPORT GRAND IN THE CITY OF NEWPORT)

→ The Atlantic Cities: The Power of the Movable Chair

In his classic 1980 study of the use of public spaces in New York City, William H. Whyte and his team of researchers used cameras to watch people and understand how they used the public places in the city. One of the takeaways from the film footage was that people like to sit in public places, and, far more fascinatingly, that if given the option they will almost always move chairs before they sit in them.

A leading Republican columnist, trying to re-stoke her candidate’s faltering campaign before the first presidential debate, felt so desperate that she advised him to turn to cities.

“Wade into the crowd, wade into the fray, hold a hell of a rally in an American city – don’t they count anymore?” Peggy Noonan lamented in The Wall Street Journal. “A big, dense city with skyscrapers like canyons, crowds and placards, and yelling. All of our campaigning now is in bland suburbs and tired hustings.”

But the fact is that cities don’t count anymore – at least not in national Republican politics.

I never got my driver’s license, which makes me an outlier in a nation of car lovers. But I have something in common with today’s teens. Recent studies show that American teenagers are far less likely to have their drivers’ licenses than their counterparts thirty years ago, and the trend continues to a lessening degree through the 20-something cohort. Today only 22 percent of drivers are under 30, down from a third in 1983.

Pedestrianized Fulton Street Alley

Fulton Street Alley

Work wrapped up last week on pedestrianizing Fulton Street Alley. It was more or less pedestrianized already with a gate blocking vehicle access, however it was dank, dark, and unattractive. With new pavement treatments and lighting on the surrounding buildings, the street becomes a much more attractive pedestrian connection between Union Street and City Hall and Kennedy Plaza beyond.

cityWALK

cityWALK

cityWALK is an initiative to encourage, promote, cajole, wheedle, drive and, ultimately ensure a pedestrian- and bike-friendly path through the new development area under the old I-195. As the planning and discussing go on, it has developed into a well thought-out plan that links Fox Point across the Pedestrian Bridge through the Jewelry District over I-95 and on via Elmwood to Roger Williams Park.

Thoughts? The City has a similar concept in mind utilizing Friendship Street rather than Clifford Street and perhaps making it’s way to Prairie Avenue to reach CCRI and the Hosptials. The City plan does not plan the system all the way from Roger Williams Park to India Point Park.

This would be a very thin linear greenway, in many areas simply a wide sidewalk with trees. What types of interventions and amenities would be good to go with a system like this?
