Taking better advantage of our position on the Northeast Corridor with its access to the Boston and NY markets is an importnt goal. Don’t forget the public meeting on ther Northeast Corridor on November 12.
In addition to all the above reasons for supporting Question 6, RIPTA will need an additional downtown hub as Kennedy Plaza reconstruction is reducing the bus capacity there by eliminating half the bus-only lanes and reducing the number of bus stop locations.
Also, if the referendum doesn’t pass, I fear getting funding to maintain the bus system or expand and improve transit options will become significantly more difficult.
Thanks for posting this.
Video is awful. Who wants to join me in a lil round of kumbaya?
David Brussat’s column in Go Local:
Dr. Downtown: Vote No on No. 6
If the referendum does not pass, attention may drift to cheaper ideas that actually improve service, like bus-only lanes, off-board fare collection and an effective system redesign instead of shiny new garages, oops, transit hubs in Kingston and Woonsocket.
The hub at Providence Station will however improve service for many if it includes a new crossing of the tracks that provides a congestion-free path for routes leaving downtown for points north.
6 is a tough decision for me.
That’s wishful thinking Andrew. The GA has shown no support for funding new transit initiatives. The fact that they threw RIPTA a few bones last session was surprising, but then they made them wait a whole year. Meanwhile, a lot of routes are crying out for more service. It’s insulting the way our legislature treats transit users, which makes the referendum process necessary as a work around.
